Family Therapy

$150 per session

Family therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on relationships and interaction patterns within families. It helps family members improve communication, resolve conflicts, and develop healthier ways of relating to one another. Sessions typically include multiple family members and are guided by a licensed therapist trained to identify dynamics that contribute to problems and to support the family in making constructive changes.

Who can benefit

  • Parents and children experiencing behavioral or emotional difficulties

  • Couples and blended families adjusting to new roles and transitions

  • Families coping with grief, divorce, substance use, mental health diagnoses, or chronic illness

  • Caregivers and adult children managing role changes and caregiving stress

  • Families wishing to strengthen communication and problem-solving skills

Goals of family therapy

  • Improve communication and listening between family members

  • Reduce conflict and establish healthier conflict-resolution strategies

  • Clarify and adjust family roles and boundaries

  • Support families through transitions and crises

  • Promote understanding and empathy among members

  • Coordinate care when one or more members are receiving individual treatment

Common approaches

  • Structural family therapy: examines and changes the organization and boundaries of the family system

  • Strategic family therapy: focuses on problem-solving strategies and behavioral change

  • Bowenian (family systems) therapy: explores multigenerational patterns and differentiation of self

  • Narrative family therapy: separates people from problems and rewrites shared stories

  • Solution-focused therapy: emphasizes strengths and practical steps to achieve specific goals

What to expect in sessions

  • Intake assessment to understand family history, current concerns, and goals

  • Sessions with two or more family members, typically 45–90 minutes

  • Therapist-led discussions, role-plays, reframing of issues, and homework assignments

  • Collaborative goal setting and progress review over time

  • A safe, confidential space to express perspectives and negotiate change

When to seek family therapy

  • Persistent communication breakdowns or escalating conflict

  • Repeated crises or patterns of behavior that harm relationships

  • Major life changes (separation, remarriage, relocation, illness)

  • When individual treatment is not resolving family-related issues

  • Desire to build resilience and improve family functioning

At Insightful Reflections Counseling LLC I provide compassionate, personalized family therapy aimed at strengthening relationships and promoting healthier family functioning. As a clinician I work with families across the lifespan, tailoring interventions to meet each family’s unique needs. If your family is struggling with communication, transitions, or recurring conflicts, family therapy can be a practical and supportive way to create lasting change.

Addiction therapy

Addiction therapy at Insightful Reflections Counseling LLC offers compassionate, individualized care to help people reduce harm, regain control, and build a sustainable recovery. • People struggling with behavioral addictions (gambling, internet/sex/food-related compulsions)

  • Loved ones affected by another’s addiction who need family or couples support

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Identify and modify unhelpful thoughts and behaviors that maintain substance use; develop coping skills.

  • Relapse Prevention: Teach strategies to anticipate triggers, manage cravings, and return to recovery after slips.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills: Emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness—useful for co-occurring mood or personality challenges.

  • Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP): Use mindfulness practices to observe cravings without acting on them.

  • Contingency Management (when appropriate): Use structured, positive reinforcement to support abstinence goals.

  • Trauma-informed care: Recognize and treat past trauma that often underlies addictive behaviors.

  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) coordination: Work collaboratively with prescribers for treatments like buprenorphine, naltrexone, or medication for alcohol use disorder when indicated.

What to expect in therapy

  • Personalized treatment plan: Goals set collaboratively, revisited regularly.

  • Skill-building sessions: Coping strategies for cravings, stress, and high-risk situations.

  • Support for co-occurring disorders: Integrated care for anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, or other mental health conditions.

  • Monitoring progress: Regular review of goals, adjustments to the plan, and coordination with medical providers, support groups, or community resources.

  • Confidential, nonjudgmental environment: Emphasis on respect, dignity, and cultural sensitivity.

Length and format of treatment

  • Frequency varies: Weekly, twice-weekly, or as clinically indicated.

  • Short-term focused work (8–12 sessions) for specific goals or stabilization.

  • Longer-term therapy for complex cases, trauma, or relapse prevention.

  • Individual, couples, and family sessions available

Goals of treatment

  • Reduce substance use and related harms.

  • Develop reliable coping skills and routines.

  • Improve mental health and relationships.

  • Increase functioning at work, school, and in daily life.

  • Build a long-term, self-directed recovery plan.
